Hilltown Press publishes short, useful nonfiction.
We’re independent, small, and selective about what we put into the world. Every book we publish has to clear one bar: it has to be genuinely useful to the reader, and it has to be short enough that the reader actually finishes it.
Why Short
Most nonfiction published today is padded. A book gets proposed as a 30,000-word idea, then stretched to 80,000 words because that’s what the publisher’s price point demands. The reader ends up paying for filler.
We don’t do that. If an idea can be communicated well in 25,000 words, we publish it at 25,000 words. If a topic genuinely needs more space, we give it more space. Length serves the reader, not the price tag.
Why Useful
Too much nonfiction is written to impress or to entertain rather than to help. Our books are written to be used — read once for understanding, kept on the shelf as a reference, returned to when a specific situation calls for a specific answer.
That means practical content, concrete examples, honest trade-offs, and enough specificity that you can actually act on what you read.
Who We Publish
Authors who know their subject from doing it, not just from writing about it. Authors who respect the reader’s time. Authors willing to cut their own prose when a chapter isn’t pulling its weight.
We publish a small number of titles per year. Quality over volume.
Where We’re Based
Massachusetts. Our books are produced, edited, and published entirely in-house.
